Video showing the Metal Prints up close, featuring a 20"x30" metal print of "Eastern Sierra Afternoon Storm" and "Sonoma Spring Sunset"
I will honestly admit that it took me a long time to develop a liking of metal prints. And this is mostly due to my own ignorance. The first metal prints I was exposed to were not very good quality and I quickly wrote them off, not knowing that excellent metal prints did exist. You just have to know where to have them made. I am happy to say that I have found an excellent vendor to work with right here in the SF Bay Area that produces stunning metal prints with the addition of placing them into a very sleek, wood float-frame that comes in black or white.
Metal prints have a unique process in which they are made. Images are first printed onto a dye transfer paper, then this paper is heat-pressed onto a thin sheet of aluminum. The images are transferred from paper to metal by gas vapor which, when cooled, returns to dye form on top of the metal. This process is called dye sublimation.
Metal prints have several benefits. Because the sheet of aluminum is so thin, they are very lightweight and easy to handle and hang. They are also much more resistant to chemicals than other mounting methods, and therefore can be cleaned using stronger cleaning solutions like ammonia, bleach, acetone, or any all-purpose cleaner. I always recommend trying to clean with a simple water-dampened soft cloth first, but it’s nice to know you could use something stronger if needed for metal prints. Probably the biggest benefit of metal prints though is their resistance to moisture. Because there is no paper print involved, metal prints are great for humid environments with heavy rain, coastal locations, kitchens, bathrooms, spas, etc. They are also very easy to hang, coming with a sturdy and simple wire system requiring only one nail or screw.
The edges and corners of metal prints are fairly sharp but because my prints come with wood frames there is no need to worry when handling them. All edges and corners are protected by the frame. As with all photographic prints and mounting options though, please handle with care to avoid surface scratches and avoid any sustained direct sunlight exposure.
One special disclaimer is that because of the unique dye sublimation process used to produce metal prints, the special coating can (not common, but possible) show subtle imperfections that when viewed at regular viewing distances would typically not be seen. Please note that returns are not accepted for the sole reason being the presence of these subtle imperfections being present.
